Welcome to Kiwi Can – a programme to help young New Zealanders achieve.
Kiwi Can is a life skills and values programme for Year 1-Year 8 students. It is run in primary and intermediate schools across New Zealand. Its aim is to help build children’s self-esteem towards a positive future by helping them to:
- become more confident
- respect themselves and others
- be better prepared to handle the challenges and opportunities that life will offer them
Kiwi Can provides a permanent and preventive model for teaching children a system of values, respect for themselves and a feeling of belonging and engagement with the community around them.
The key message is “I can”, and by positively affirming this message, Kiwi Can teaches young New Zealanders that the first step towards a better future for the whole country starts with the attitudes and aspirations of the individual. Kiwi Can believes that by supporting the individual, building their self-esteem, and strengthening their basic values, a real change can be made in downstream behaviour patterns such as educational failure, anti-social behaviour and crime.
Kiwi Can challenges and develops the students in a positive way to increase their:
- Physical fitness
- Mental awareness
- Creative abilities
- Understanding, retention and implementation of values and life skills
